Training at Three Rivers Dojo

The Three Rivers Dojo is a place where one can learn the art of the Japanese sword.

Students begin on the path with basic techniques and wooden training weapons. As one’s skill increases, more advanced techniques are given. Eventually swords are introduced, and more techniques are presented. Students learn the theory and the application of kenjutsu. Contemporary times demand a methodology that fits and works with today. Students get a healthy dose of traditional techniques and practices along with strenuous training sessions designed to push the body and the mind. Practice includes activities like Sword drawing (iai) and sparring with bokken (shobu) and practice cutting (sueomono) on rolled tatami mat targets. Not all people that join the Three Rivers Dojo will be successful in this program, it requires hard work and dedication to obtain rank and status in the dojo. This program is structured for those students that have a desire to learn this art form. Some people are drawn to the sword naturally. If you are one of them, stop dreaming and join us!

At the Three Rivers School of Kenjutsu/Iaido (Three Rivers Dojo), we train in a well-rounded, compelling, and pragmatic style of Japanese kenjutsu and iaijutsu/Iaido. We exist as a complete sword school based on the authentic koryū tradition of classical Japanese martial arts. We also maintain high principles of discipline and self-cultivation as budō should be practiced.

The goal at the Three Rivers Dojo is to give the student a grounded and deep understanding of classical Japanese kenjutsu and iaijutsu/iaido within the school. When you join a bujutsu system to learn the sword, the aim should be to become a swordsman in that particular system (ryū-ha) and understand the sword combat of the respective school. We strive for grounded and authentic swordsmanship training.

We offer an authentic and comprehensive iaijutsu and kenjutsu system to learn. The school's instructor is experienced and patient, competently transmitting his knowledge and techniques to the students. At the Three Rivers Dojo, students’ progress as their abilities allow. The classical sword training is thorough and in-depth. Since there are many techniques in training the sword, one cannot expect to acquire expert proficiency in a short time. Rather this is an art that is to be studied as a way of life over a lifetime. Always striving to perfect your technique and therefore yourself. If you are a serious and dedicated person, please inquire about practicing with us.

At the Three Rivers Dojo, our Way of learning is unique. It is an in-depth and intensive study of Japanese swordsmanship. The focus is on you and your progress, not an esoteric "course system", or frequent testing and their associated nickel and dime fees every other month. The study is serious, and the teacher's interest is in building solid basics to develop more complicated and in-depth techniques and concepts as the student progresses. It is similar to learning in a traditional school in Japan.

The Three Rivers Dojo does not sell courses or single lessons. It is traditional learning as is typically done in most koryū. It is an intensive one-to-one student and teacher relationship based on honest teaching and learning. Students do not fly by the seat of their pants. It is a traditional school of swordsmanship. Learning is linear and in stages.
